Speech of the President of Italy on the 150th Birthday of Maria Montessori

The President of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, issued the following statement on the 150th anniversary of the birth of Maria Montessori.

Mattarella: "The school community is a decisive resource

 for the future of the national community"

Maria Montessori was born one hundred and fifty years ago, in Chiaravalle. Her humanity, her studies, her courageous experience as an educator, have left a profound mark in the pedagogical sciences and indicated new horizons for the school, for the benefit of millions of young people in every part of the world, who have been able to increase in their personality in complete freedom.

Precisely in the hardest years of the twentieth century, Maria Montessori managed to break ancient prejudices, demonstrating the unreasonableness of teaching methods based on authoritarianism and contrasting marginalization practices against those who were suffering or were considered different, paving the way for a path of growth of children based on the full expression of their creativity, in responsible training for sociability.

Her 'method' has crossed borders and, in her name, many educators, girls and boys, have given the school a value of growth in knowledge that, alongside literary and scientific knowledge, has an eye on integral development of the pupils' personality.

Maria Montessori's life was also symbolically a story of freedom, intelligence, female creativity. There are many teachers, educators, school workers who continue to commit themselves today with the same passion.

The school community is a decisive resource for the future of the national community, precisely as an irreplaceable vehicle of sociality for children and young people: we understand even more its importance after the closures imposed by the pandemic. Examples like that of Maria Montessori urge us to effectively face the responsibilities of this difficult moment.

“Maria Montessori nasceva centocinquanta anni fa, a Chiaravalle. La sua umanità, i suoi studi, la sua coraggiosa esperienza di educatrice, hanno impresso un segno profondo nelle scienze pedagogiche e indicato orizzonti nuovi per la scuola, a beneficio di milioni di giovani in ogni parte del mondo, che hanno potuto e saputo accrescere in piena libertà la loro personalità.

Proprio negli anni più duri del Novecento Maria Montessori è riuscita a infrangere antichi pregiudizi, dimostrando la irragionevolezza di metodi di insegnamento basati sull’autoritarismo e contrastando pratiche di emarginazione ai danni di chi era sofferente o veniva considerato diverso, aprendo la strada a un percorso di crescita dei bambini basato sulla piena espressione della loro creatività, nella formazione responsabile alla socialità.

Il suo “metodo” ha varcato le frontiere e, nel suo nome, tantissime educatrici ed educatori, ragazze e ragazzi, hanno conferito alla scuola un valore di crescita nella conoscenza che, accanto al sapere letterario e scientifico, abbia lo sguardo rivolto allo sviluppo integrale della personalità degli alunni.

La vita di Maria Montessori è stata anche simbolicamente una storia di libertà, di intelligenza, di creatività femminile. Sono tante le insegnanti, le educatrici, le operatrici scolastiche che continuano oggi a impegnarsi con la medesima passione.

La comunità della scuola è risorsa decisiva per il futuro della comunità nazionale, proprio in quanto veicolo insostituibile di socialità per i bambini e i ragazzi: ne comprendiamo ancor più l’importanza dopo le chiusure imposte dalla pandemia. Esempi come quello di Maria Montessori esortano ad affrontare efficacemente le responsabilità di questo momento difficile.”
